CARINOLA – They attempted to smuggle cell phones into Carinola prison, but were caught and arrested red-handed: two men from the Salerno area were stopped by Penitentiary Police while throwing small packages containing smartphones over the prison wall.
The operation began in the early afternoon of Friday, February 14, when officers from the control room, using surveillance cameras, noticed a suspicious car on a dirt road behind the prison. General surveillance, supported by two officers in a squad car, intervened immediately, catching the two as they attempted to launch the devices.
After arresting the suspects, the authorities launched an internal search of the prison, finding four packages containing cell phones near the sports field and another near the two pitchers.

After the ritual communications to the Public Prosecutor, the two were placed under house arrest and searches were also carried out in their homes. The operations continued until three in the morning, thanks to the extraordinary commitment of the Penitentiary Police personnel of carinola.
The episode has brought attention back to the issue of the illegal introduction of cell phones into Italian prisons. Donato Capece, general secretary of the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (SAPPE), stressed that the problem has been known for years and reiterated the need for urgent measures, such as shielding the facilities and combating the use of drones for the illicit trafficking of material. SAPPE has launched an appeal to the Ministry of Justice and the Regional Office of the Penitentiary Administration to adopt extraordinary measures to strengthen the security of penitentiary institutions and protect staff.

It is a problem that always exists, and it is difficult to stop, but security must be a priority. Telephones inside prisons lead to greater problems for those who work there and for those who are detained. More attention is needed.
