It will take just fifteen minutes to transport blood bags or biological material from the Santa Maria delle Grazie hospital in Pozzuoli to the Anna Rizzoli hospital in Lacco Ameno. Last February 18, the first test flights of hi-tech cargo drones went well, which promise to “bring” the green island closer to the mainland, helping to reduce waiting times in the case of urgent transfusions or life-saving operations.
The “Aetos” project
The "Aetos" project, developed by Unmanned4you, is now in its second phase of testing. Founded with the aim of innovating the transportation sector, the company also aims to improve surveillance, search, and rescue (SAR) services, as well as environmental monitoring. In particular, at the ASL Napoli 2 Nord, the feasibility of transporting blood and biological materials, including organs, represents a major step forward in healthcare. During the trials, drones from the South Tyrolean tech company FlyingBasket covered the 17-kilometer distance between the two facilities, performing four test flights and carrying a 4-kilogram payload.
Drones and healthcare
In recent years, the use of drones has become crucial in providing lifesaving care to women in logistically complex areas, such as Botswana, where the maternal mortality rate is among the highest in the world.

"The transportation of biological materials, pharmaceuticals, and emergency services via drones represents a fundamental innovation," said Valeria Fascione, Campania Region Councilor for Research, Innovation, and Startups, who was present at the trials. "These new solutions could prove extremely useful for the community, not only by improving emergency response, but also by helping to define new standards in the sector," she added.
Innovation and sustainability
Carmine Esposito, co-founder of Unmanned4you, highlighted the importance of new technologies to ensure social and universal access to healthcare. "The use of drones," emphasized Moritz Moroder, CEO and co-founder of FlyingBasket, "to safely connect remote areas or islands to the mainland is becoming increasingly revolutionary for logistics services. The healthcare sector is one of the areas of development for cargo drones." Furthermore, the use of drones offers potential benefits for environmental sustainability, helping to reduce polluting emissions and fossil fuel consumption.

The use of drones to transport biological materials seems very interesting and useful, especially for healthcare. I hope this technology can be implemented in other regions, not only in Campania. The benefits would be significant.
