Seven years and six months in prison: this is the sentence handed down by the Court of Appeal of Naples to Carmine Cascio, a 37-year-old Neapolitan resident of Ciampino.

The man pretended to be a non-commissioned officer of the Carabinieri, a parliamentary official and a member of the secret services, thus managing to extort money and jewels from a 51-year-old woman from Frignano in exchange for an alleged job for her son in the Papal State.

In the first instance, Cascio – defended by the lawyer Diego Del Regno – had been sentenced to 11 years in prison for fraud and aggravated extortion. The Attorney General's Office, represented by the deputy prosecutor Valleverdina Cassaniello, had requested confirmation of the sentence, but the appeal judges reduced the sentence by a third.

The accessory penalties remain confirmed, including the ban from holding public office, a provisional fine of 10.000 euros and the obligation to compensate the victim.
