There is also a bribe of hundreds of thousands of euros pocketed by the former mayor of Giugliano, Antonio Poziello together with the former municipal councilor Francesco Carleo to disturb the tender called for the awarding of the road works connecting the NATO base in Giugliano.
It is one of the charges brought by the investigators of the DDA and the Reeds of Naples for which the investigating judge Federica Colucci did not deem it necessary to issue a precautionary measure. Bribe paid by a person not yet identified and who was one of the company emissaries of Pozzuoli which had been awarded the million-dollar contract in 2016.
The investigating judge instead ordered the prison sentence for the former mayor Poziello in view of the upcoming municipal elections and above all because, it is explained, the suspect “appears absolutely indifferent to penal precepts and to the authorities responsible for their observance”.
Francis Carleo instead he is under investigation at large because according to the investigating judge “There are no current precautionary needs.”
the role of mayor Poziello and the links with the Mallardo clan
From the statements of the collaborators of justice an alarming picture emerges of the system of corruption rooted in Giugliano. Philip Caracallo, one of the repentants, revealed during an interrogation: “I know that Mayor Poziello was supported by the “Palazzine” group of Giugliano. In discussions with Michele and Aniello Di Biase, as well as with Giuseppe Mele, they confirmed their commitment to get him elected. At the time, there had not yet been a split: the members of the “Palazzine” were part of the Mallardo clan”.
In 2020, in view of the new municipal elections, Domenico Pirozzi, regent of the Mallardo family, ordered an affiliate to support Poziello in exchange for money to be allocated to the clan's common fund and to ensure access to public procurement. The gang's activity intensified as the vote approached, with its henchmen deployed across the territory to solicit support for the candidate: “Where are you? At the garbage dump making vows to Poziello?”, we read in an interception.
The judge's reconstruction
Il GIP in the more than 1400 pages of the precautionary order with which yesterday he ordered the prison of 25 people he outlined a systematic corruption system, underlining in the reasons for the order: “The wiretaps involving Antonio Poziello show how corruption incidents were a consolidated practice in the exercise of his public functions. During his term as mayor of Giugliano (2002-2015), was the linchpin of a network that distributed bribes in agreement with city councilors, some of whom were close to the Mallardo clan."
The final passage is clear: “Poziello, now a city councilor in the context of upcoming elections, represents a concrete risk of repetition of the crimes. For this reason, pretrial detention in prison is the only effective measure”.
