Fausta Bonino, the nurse at the Piombino hospital, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Court of Cassation for the murder of several patients between 2014 and 2015.
According to the prosecution, Bonino injected her patients with an unnecessary drug, administering in particular large doses of heparin, an anticoagulant that would have caused serious internal bleeding, leading to their death. The woman has always maintained her innocence and, in correspondence with her arrest in 2016, several critical issues emerged regarding the reconstruction of the prosecution.
A ten-year process
The trial involving Bonino lasted for about ten years and was notably complex. Initially, the nurse was charged with 13 suspicious deaths, a number later reduced to 10. In 2022, at the end of the first appeal trial, she was acquitted on all ten charges related to the deaths. However, the Court of Cassation subsequently requested a new trial for four of these deaths.

The new appeal trial concluded in May 2024, resulting in a life sentence for voluntary multiple homicide. The ruling of the Supreme Court definitively established Bonino's responsibility, putting an end to a case that had kept public opinion in suspense for years.
