Over 600 kilos of contraband cigarettes were discovered by the Carabinieri in an operation that led to the arrest of a married couple, Ciro Mandarino and Carmela Scudo, residents of Massa di Somma. The discovery was made thanks to the intervention of Carabinieri from the Cercola station at the couple's home.

The discovery of the police

During a house search, officers found the first 21 cartons of contraband cigarettes, along with €2.000 in cash, believed to be the illicit proceeds of the crime. The investigation then moved to the area surrounding the residence, where officers found a further quantity of foreign-produced tobacco in two abandoned farmhouses.

The seizure in the farmhouses

The total amount of seized goods amounted to 600 kilos, divided into 70 packages, all bearing a brand identical to the one found in the couple's apartment. Following these discoveries, Mandarino and Scudo, aged 54 and 52 respectively, were arrested on charges of smuggling of foreign manufactured tobacco products (TLE) and brought to prison.

It is true that cigarette smuggling is a serious problem for society, but I wonder how it is possible that two people can have so much merchandise in their home without being discovered first. The police should do more checks.
