The choir of the San Carlo Theatre of Napoli has announced plans to take legal action in response to statements it deems defamatory. The statements, published by the British newspaper The Times, have been attributed to Edward Gardner, director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
According to lawyers Angelo and Sergio Pisani, the choir members, including a recently retired tenor, were offended by accusations that the choir was composed of rival mafia families.
The lawyers, charged with taking legal action, underline the seriousness of the accusations which they consider "unacceptable" and ask for a defense strong on the part of the Teatro San Carlo.
The lawyers further highlighted that such statements damage the integrity of a high-profile international institution. Teatro San Carlo It is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site and represents an important cultural symbol for Italy and Europe, the lawyers say.
They also argue that unfounded claims such as these could jeopardize the reputation and future of a theater with a long tradition of promoting art and music.
