The historic chocolate shop Gay Odin has reopened to the public its shop at Via Chiaia 237, a place that represents an important slice of history of Napoli.
Article Key Points
Founded in 1920 by Isidoro Odin and Onorina Gay, the chocolate shop has undergone a careful restoration that has brought to light the original features of the premises, preserving the period furniture and finishes.
A historical and artistic heritage
Recognized as an Art Nouveau jewel, the store is located a few steps from Piazza del Plebiscito and the central Via Toledo. This recovery is the result of the commitment of the Maglietta family, who have led the company since 1980. The renovation has respected the structural and artistic peculiarities of the place, which maintains intact the Liberty charm that has always distinguished the image of Gay-Odin.
The Superintendency of Naples has underlined the importance of the place, considered "among the last testimonies of a cultural phenomenon that informed the Neapolitan environment in the time span between the end of the 19th century and the first post-war period". With the restoration, attention was paid not only to the interior spaces but also to the period furnishings, such as the counter and the accessories characterized by natural and floral inlays typical of Art Nouveau.
A new experience for customers
The store officially reopened on February 17, once again offering the chance to taste the company's delicacies. Visitors can find the confectionery specialties made according to Isidoro Odin's secret recipes, such as Gianduiotti, Imperiali and orange peels dipped in dark cocoa. Among the new features, an ice cream counter offers various creations inspired by the chocolate classics.
Recognized for its handcrafted craftsmanship, Gay-Odin continues to be a point of reference not only for chocolate lovers, but also for those who wish to savor a piece of Neapolitan history.
