A Texas tourist was welcomed, treated, and operated on at San Paolo Hospital. The woman was in Naples to celebrate her wedding anniversary. She wrote a letter of thanks to the doctors and healthcare workers at the Fuorigrotta hospital.

A sudden illness, the call to 118, then the first hospitalization in the Emergency Room. The story is that of an American tourist who arrived in Italy with her husband to celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary. Julia (name changed to protect her privacy), 71, began to feel ill from the first day in Naples.

Called 118 and rushed to the Emergency Room of the Presidio San Paolo, where, after all the diagnostic tests of the case, they diagnosed her with acute cholecystitis. Undergoing medical therapy with hydration and antibiotic therapy, she obtained a remission of the symptoms and was then discharged in good clinical conditions.

However, 3 days after discharge, the woman had a new acute episode and returned to the emergency room of the same hospital where she promptly underwent all the necessary tests, including blood tests, electrocardiogram, surgical examination, abdominal ultrasound which revealed a lithiasic gallbladder with thickened and edematous walls and on the same day she was transferred to the General Surgery Unit directed by Alberto D'Agostino.

Here, for a more in-depth evaluation, Julia also underwent a cholangio-MR and therefore, in light of the clinical picture and instrumental tests, an indication for emergency surgery was given.

 Underwent emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery

Julia underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy (surgeons Domenico Fico, Alessio Ruggiero. Anesthetist Maria Lucia Tuccillo supported by the entire nursing team coordinated by Vincenzo Nota). The post-operative course was regular. The patient continued clinical monitoring with daily visits and blood tests until discharge.

“Even in this case, the women and men of ASL Napoli 1 Centro were extraordinary – says Ciro Verdoliva – general director of ASL Napoli 1 Centro”. “Thanks to their professionalism and competence, they treated a clinical case in the best possible way. An excellent healthcare system that offers answers to our fellow citizens every day and, when needed, also to those who are just passing through Naples”.

“Thanks also go to Julia for the thanks sent to the protagonists of this new page of good health”.

In fact, a few days ago, Julia sent a letter of commendation to San Paolo, where she wrote beautiful words about all the staff who assisted and cared for her and that we want you to read too.

The Texan Patient's Thank You Letter

Dear Doctors Antonio Graunaniello, D'Agnostino, Eleonora CARDONE,
Head Nurse of the Surgery Department Giovana, Surgery Department POSPaolo,
I send you many, many thanks and compliments for the superior medical care you gave me when I was suddenly struck by the medical emergency of “Acute Lithiasic Cholecystitis” and for your care from December 20 to 2024, 80125 at San Paolo Hospital, XNUMX Naples.

My husband and I came to Naples to celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary. But from the first day this acute attack began.
I didn't know what was happening to me, but I know it hurt a lot and I felt very, very bad.

Your team was compassionate, extremely helpful. I am 71 years old and, having lived in the US, Czech Republic, Austria and the Netherlands, I have been hospitalized in those countries (tonsils, penicillin reaction, food poisoning, childbirth). I have never received the extraordinary care of your nursing staff and the helpfulness and support of your doctors.

Here's a summary of my experience:
1. I went to the emergency room twice by ambulance. The waiting time to see a doctor was short on both December 10 and 2024, XNUMX. The waiting time at the surgical department was also short. St. Paul after a second ultrasound showed a gallbladder inflamed by gallstones.
2. Fortunately, on December 11, the doctor decided that I was ill and needed to be admitted to the surgical department of San Paolo after a second ultrasound showed a gallbladder inflamed by gallstones.
3. The ward rooms were great: super clean, bright with windows, only 3 patients max per room. The beds were excellent. The nurses came every day to give clean sheets, which made me feel so good.
4. The nursing staff was excellent!!!! Some spoke English, some didn't and we used Google Translate with great success. They were kind, caring, funny, helpful. In the US, if you call the nurse for help, it could take 30 minutes. Every time at ROS. Paolo, they were there in less than 2 minutes. They were never angry or impatient. When I had questions about food or pharmacy, they immediately referred me to a doctor and gave me an immediate answer.
5. Doctors: Amazing! Helpful. Compassionate. Proactive. Kind. Knowledgeable. Speaks English. Good sense of humor.
You almost make me want to move to Naples to be near your hospital. In the future, we hope to return to Naples in good health. And we will eat pizza together!
With love and thanks
