On February 21, a new book dedicated to enthusiasts and those curious about ancient Pompeii will hit the bookstores. The volume, written by journalist and essayist Carlo Avvisati, is entitled “Pompeii. A 2000-year-old tourist 'guide'” and is part of the Le guide Marlin series, directed by Paolo Romano.
THE BOOK
The book offers a detailed visit to the Roman city of Pompeii, starting with a story set in August 79 AD. Four Roman freedmen travel to Pompeii with the task of investigating the earthquakes that shook the city, just before the devastating eruption of Vesuvius. Through their journey, Avvisati accompanies the reader through the alleys and monuments, exploring daily life two millennia ago. From artisan workshops to sumptuous patrician buildings, the text offers a journey through time that explores various aspects of Pompeii life, from trade to entertainment and the arts.
AUTHOR'S COMMENT
Carlo Avvisati describes his work as an experience that aims to bring Pompeii back to life for the modern reader. “The guide was born from the idea of literally taking the visitor by the hand who arrives in Pompeii…”, explains Avvisati, underlining the importance of a scientifically accurate representation of the historical facts and events that characterized the city.
THE CURATOR
Paolo Romano, curator of the series, emphasizes how each book is aimed at exploring the territories and history in an original and narrative way, without neglecting the accuracy of the sources. “This 'journey' to Pompeii, exploiting the evocative power of the words of an expert, leads the reader to move with great curiosity through the alleys of the ancient Roman city…”, says Romano.
