Salerno - An investigation has been opened into the tragic accident that occurred today in Salerno, on Via Fra' Generoso, where a 49-year-old cyclist, Domenico Campanile of Casagiove, lost his life after being hit by a bale of recycled plastic that fell from a truck.
According to initial reconstructions, Campanile, a small construction entrepreneur with a passion for mountain biking, was out with some friends on a bike ride when a truck, which was traveling on the same road, lost part of its load of eco-bales.
One of these, weighing approximately 2500 kilos, struck the group of cyclists, causing the immediate death of Campanile and seriously injuring another cyclist, 42, also a resident of the Caserta area. He suffered fractures to his tibia and femur and is currently hospitalized at Ruggi Hospital in Salerno.
The firefighters intervened at the scene of the accident, freeing Campanile's body and removing the eco-bales from the roadway, while the municipal police and the state police carried out technical surveys to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident, under the coordination of the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office, which ordered an autopsy on the victim's body.
News of the tragedy quickly spread to Casagiove, where Campanile was well known and respected. The 49-year-old leaves behind his wife and two children.
