The Carabinieri of the CITES Unit in Naples recently seized two Mississippi alligators and a reticulated python from the “Lidia Togni nel Mondo” circus following a joint operation with the Veterinary Service of the ASL NA1 Centro and the Regional Reference Center for Urban Veterinary Hygiene.
The intervention aimed to verify the proper housing of the animals and compliance with CITES regulations. The incident comes amidst an already complicated media landscape for the circus, following the recent escape of a camel through the streets of Fuorigrotta , which subsequently died.
The legality of animal ownership has been called into question by Legislative Decree 135/2022, which prohibits the acquisition of species deemed dangerous to public safety by circuses and traveling wildlife shows.
The animals, acquired between 2023 and 2024, were seized, and the circus owner was reported to the competent authorities. The reticulated python was temporarily entrusted to the Naples Zoo, while the alligators are awaiting transfer to an authorized facility.
This incident comes amid growing scrutiny of circuses, with an ongoing investigation into the camel's death pending autopsy results.
