On Wednesday, February 19th, at 21.30:1 PM, Rai XNUMX will broadcast the documentary "Edoardo Bennato. Sono solo canzonette," written and directed by Stefano Salvati.
The film offers an intimate journey into the biography of the Neapolitan singer-songwriter, for whom music has always been a life companion. Since high school, Bennato has ventured into the world of music, embarking on a journey that will lead him to cross the threshold of record companies.
Despite initial difficulties related to his innovative style and his voice, which was considered awkward, his determination led him to London, armed with a pedal tambourine, a guitar, a harmonica and a kazoo. This equipment allowed him to perform as a one-man-band, creating a unique musical combination that merged blues, rock, punk and Mediterranean sounds.
The beginnings
With his debut album, "Non farsi caduta le braccia", released in 1974, Bennato laid the foundations of his career, which was intertwined with the social and political challenges of the "years of lead".

Thus began his first concert tour across Italy, which would lead him to the pinnacle of his career with "Burattino senza fili," an opera that uses the famous tale of Pinocchio to reflect on current events. Bennato thus established himself as the first Italian artist to fill stadiums, a meaning the documentary elaborates on with a conclusion that takes place at one of these historic concerts.
The structure of the documentary
The documentary does not limit itself to retracing Edoardo Bennato's musical career, but also explores its more personal aspects. Through a rich repertoire of private videos and photos, many of which unpublished, the film offers a glimpse into the artist's life. Numerous interviews with personalities from the Italian music and entertainment scene, including Paolo Conte, Jovanotti, Ligabue, Max Pezzali, Leonardo Pieraccioni and Dori Ghezzi, further enrich the story.
Throughout the narrative, fairytale characters—from Peter Pan to Captain Hook to Jiminy Cricket—surrealize, illustrating the various chapters of Bennato's life. The documentary showcases his greatest hits, featuring both original live versions and soundtracks. Stefano Salvati, the project's director, incorporates a visual language characteristic of Anglo-Saxon and Asian commercials, creating a work that aims to capture the attention of a wide audience.
