There are five contaminated sites in the Land of fires, almost all in the Caserta area, for which the Region Campania has raised resources for almost 70 million overall through the Development and Cohesion Funds and whose remediation could start shortly: it is the largest underground landfill in Europe, the former Pozzi Ginori of Calvi Risorta, therefore the area of
Lo Uttaro, a suburb of Caserta, for which the Italian State was also condemned last November by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) precisely because of the lack of reclamation; the Cava Monti in Maddaloni, not too far from Lo Uttaro, the Masseria Annunziata and Cuponi Sagliano landfills in Villa Literno, also in the Caserta area, and the agricultural lands forbidden to cultivation because they are polluted.
The sites were indicated in a letter sent on February 5th by the President of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca to the Undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council Alfredo Mantovano, to the Minister of the Environment Alberto Pichetto Fratin, to the Deputy Minister Vannia Gava and to the sole commissioner for the implementation of interventions for the reclamation of illegal landfills Giuseppe Vadalà, who in the meantime, as of yesterday, also became the Sole Commissioner for the Land of Fires.
In the letter, made public today during the Ecomafia Commission's visit to the Royal Palace of Carditello, the Region asks to continue the collaboration with the Sole Commissioner for reclamation activities, as has happened in recent years.
The two illegal sites in Villa Literno are the ones for which the Region has committed the most resources, 27 million euros, while in Maddaloni for the Cava Monti site, the Region has allocated 20 million euros; thirteen million are instead foreseen for the ex Pozzi Ginori area of Calvi Risorta, where the largest underground landfill in Europe was discovered by the Carabinieri Forestali, while for Lo Uttaro in Caserta, where the investigations of the judiciary and the characterization plan have ascertained the contamination of the aquifer, 2,7 million are foreseen.
Then there are the compromised agricultural lands for which the Region foresees 6 million euros for excavation and characterization activities.
