The third event in the “Caravaggio in music” series, part of the exhibition curated by the Carisal Foundation “Caravaggio. The Taking of Christ from the Ruffo Collection”, will take place on Friday 28 February at 19:00 pm at the San Michele Complex in Salerno.
The Ensemble Salerno Classica will be at the center of the event, with Sergio Martinoli and Shaady Mucciolo on violins, Francesco D'Arcangelo on cello and Marianna Meroni on harpsichord. The evening will also feature soprano Giulia Lepore and contralto Cristina D'Alessandro.
Homage to Caravaggio and Baroque Music
The initiative is part of “I Venerdì di Caravaggio”, a cycle oriented to Baroque music. Domenico Credendino, president of the Carisal Foundation, highlighted how these evenings represent an opportunity to get closer to the works of Michelangelo Merisi. Friday's program, which accompanies the viewing of Caravaggio's “Taking of Christ”, was developed in collaboration with the “Concerti d'Estate di Villa Guariglia” and under the technical direction of Olga Chieffi. The evening is a tribute to the Roman and Neapolitan Baroque schools, represented respectively by Arcangelo Corelli and Alessandro Scarlatti.
Musical Repertoire
The performance will include Arcangelo Corelli's “Follia”, a sonata from Op. 5 that has become fundamental in European music. This theme, which boasts Iberian origins, has inspired many composers, demonstrating Corelli's ability to create articulated melodic variations. The second part of the event will feature Alessandro Scarlatti's “Stabat Mater” in C minor.
Composed in Naples and preserved in the Library of the Conservatory of Music in Florence, this work was commissioned by the Congregation of the Knights of the Virgin of Sorrows. Written for a small ensemble, the work intensely expresses maternal pain through solo episodes and duets, concluding in an evocative finale.

I read about the event on Friday and it seems like a very interesting initiative. Baroque music is truly a genre that has a lot to offer, especially with such talented artists. I hope to be able to participate.
