Rome - “We are at risk of dramatic events. Only luck has prevented some recent episodes from not having a tragic epilogue”: with these words, the Police Chief of Rome Roberto Massucci raised the alarm regarding the situation of growing violence and illegality inside Italian stadiums, during his speech at the 30th congress of the National Association of Security Delegates (ANDES).
Massucci stressed that “the situation in the corners is out of control”, highlighting how a restructuring has taken place “negative aggregation mechanism” which fuels crimes both inside and outside the stadiums. The reference is to recent events, such as the railway blockade, which involved ultras and which are only the tip of the iceberg of a much more complex reality.
“Crimes are committed inside the curves, as demonstrated by the investigations in Milan and Verona. The 'Bentegodi', for example, was a real drug dealing square”, added the Police Commissioner. The explosion of violence and crimes linked to stadiums has found a further aggravating factor, according to Massucci, in the phenomenon of “generational change” which characterized the organized cheering.
“Today, there are many young people in the curves who, according to the older ones, are defined as 'uncontrollable'. This phenomenon has led to an escalation of tensions and deviant behaviors”, explained Massucci, reiterating the need for an institutional response and greater attention to safety at sporting events.
The Police Chief finally highlighted the need for coordinated action between law enforcement, sports institutions and civil society to stem this worrying phenomenon, with the aim of ensuring safety inside and outside stadiums and preventing further episodes of violence.
