Two years after the Tempe train disaster, the Greek community living in Naples will gather tomorrow in Largo Berlinguer for a protest: the initiative aims to keep attention alive on the tragedy that, on February 28, 2023, caused the death of 57 people and over 180 injured, in one of the most serious train accidents in the history of Greece.
The protesters denounce that the accident was not an isolated human error, but the result of systematic omissions and serious failures to comply with European regulations on railway safety. According to the appeal issued by the initiators of the protest, the disaster could have been avoided if the project for the modernization of the signaling and remote control system of the Athens-Thessaloniki line, funded by the European Union, had been correctly implemented by the Greek authorities.
At the heart of the protest was also the request to ascertain the actual causes of the fire that devastated the carriages of the passenger train: an audio broadcast after the tragedy revealed that many victims did not die due to the collision, but from asphyxiation, following the fire started by the alleged transport of an “illegal chemical load” on the freight train involved.
The Greek community of Naples is pointing the finger at the political class and the heads of the railway companies involved in managing the national network: OSE , the Hellenic Railways Authority; ERGOSE , responsible for infrastructure development; and HELLENIC TRAIN , controlled by the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, the sole rail transport operator in Greece. “The Tempe tragedy was not an accident, but a crime dictated by indifference, irresponsibility, and corruption. It must not go unpunished ,” say the protesters, who will forcefully demand justice in the heart of Naples tomorrow.
