L'Aquila – The Abruzzo Region declares itself ready to face a possible emergency related to the evacuation of the population of Campi Flegrei. Mauro Casinghini, outgoing director of the regional Civil Protection, assured that the Abruzzo Civil Protection system is prepared, thanks also to the exercises carried out, the last of which dates back to last October.
“We are ready,” Casinghini said, emphasizing the agreements made with the twinned municipality of Monte di Procida (Naples) and the preparation of an “entry point” for the hospitality of the evacuees in Castel di Sangro, by virtue of a memorandum of understanding with the Municipality. “We hope that the situation does not worsen, but our system is able to respond to both local and national and international emergencies,” he added.
Daniela Roncone, director of the Abruzzo Civil Protection, highlighted the planning already underway for the management of a possible emergency. “In these two years we have organized the reception of the population that could arrive from the Campi Flegrei,” Roncone declared during the inauguration of the new Training Center for Civil Protection in L’Aquila.
The plan includes Castel di Sangro as the main access point, from where the displaced will then be distributed to other destinations. Agreements have already been made with hotel facilities and school services to ensure adequate reception. “We have started a series of useful relationships to address the situation if necessary,” Roncone explained.
Although there is currently no imminent emergency, the Abruzzo Region has also planned to set up a reception area in Giugliano (Naples) to organize the transportation of displaced persons by bus to Castel di Sangro, if necessary.
