The Regional Council of Campania recently unanimously approved a bill that aims to protect, enhance and promote the region's band heritage, including the Majorette Corps.
The initiative, promoted by regional councilor Corrado Matera, represents a significant recognition for a tradition deeply rooted in local culture. According to official data, in Campania there are about 150 musical bands, involving over 6.000 people, although unofficial estimates speak of numbers exceeding 10.000 units.
Cultural Roots and Participation
The proposed law is the result of a consultation process that began in June 2023, during which local entities actively participated. Matera emphasized how the band culture is particularly alive, with municipalities in the Salerno area where almost every home has a musical instrument. Some of these municipalities host up to three musical bands, and in several territories dedicated museums have been founded.
Key points of the law
Among the measures included in the law, there is the establishment of a Regional Register of Musical Bands and Majorette Corps, and the organization of a Regional Musical Band Day, celebrated on the last Saturday in May. It also proposes the provision of annual contributions for the purchase of instruments and the organization of events and competitions, and a system for monitoring the law, with a fund of 300 thousand euros per year. Matera expressed the hope that the Musical Band Day could attract attention at a national level, citing the possibility of including prominent figures from the musical scene.

The approval of the law on musical bands is important, but there are some points that are not clear. I hope that the methods of financing and how the bands that will participate in the events will be chosen will be clarified. It is essential to have more information.
