Benevento – A new happy event has marked the resumption of activities at the Medically Assisted Procreation Centre (PMA) of the San Pio Hospital Trust in Benevento. Benevento: the first child conceived through PMA techniques was born after the reopening of the center.
The birth, which took place in a birthing center of another hospital, involved a couple not residing in the province, confirming the high capacity of San Pio to attract patients from other regions, in particular Molise, Puglia, Basilicata and lower Lazio. These areas represent approximately 65-70% of the couples who turn to the Benevento center.
A significant milestone after years of inactivity
The baby's birth is not the first result of PMA techniques at San Pio - since 2004, over 2.000 children have been born thanks to these procedures - but it is the first after the reopening of the center, which occurred after five years of forced inactivity.
“There was a bit of tension, and it was right that it should be that way,” admitted Alfredo Nazzaro, Head of the UOSD Physiopathology of Human Reproduction and Integrated Prenatal Diagnosis at the AORN San Pio.
“Restarting after so long and maintaining the high standards that have always distinguished us was not a given, especially considering that we have renewed 90% of the staff. Finding the right synchronizations and amalgams was a challenge, but I would say it went well. Today we have about twenty pregnancies underway”.
Infertility: A Growing Social Problem
Nazzaro highlighted how infertility is becoming an increasingly widespread social problem, affecting approximately 15-20% of couples, often due to socio-economic factors. Furthermore, the average age of women trying to get pregnant continues to rise: in the European Union, the average first child arrives around the age of 30.
“ART centers must always find new strategies to deal with these additional difficulties,” added the manager, thanking the Company's General Manager, Maria Morgante, for the constant support and trust placed in the team's work.
A thank you to the new parents and the staff
Morgante herself expressed great satisfaction for the milestone achieved: "Best wishes to the new parents, whom I thank for turning to us. A special thanks goes to all the staff of the Reproductive Medicine Department of San Pio, who enthusiastically faces daily challenges, and to the entire healthcare team, whose commitment testifies to the quality of our care, equipped with advanced techniques and cutting-edge equipment."
The General Manager then underlined the importance of stories like this, which give hope to couples who struggle to conceive and find in PMA a concrete possibility to realize the dream of becoming parents.
A new hope for the future
With the reopening of the center and the first positive results, the AORN San Pio of Benevento confirms itself as a point of reference for assisted procreation in Southern Italy, ready to welcome and support more and more couples in a journey that is often complex but full of hope.
