A new case of anomalous concentration of carbon dioxide, linked to the phenomenon of bradyseism in the Campi Flegrei, has been detected inside a school in Naples: the report was made public by the head of Civil Protection, Fabio Ciciliano, during the monothematic session of the City Council dedicated to the ongoing bradyseismic crisis.
The critical point is located at the Hotel Institute in via Terracina, where the measurements have highlighted anomalous levels of CO₂. The situation required immediate intervention by the authorities: “A meeting has been called at 14pm today at the Prefecture to address the problem”, Ciciliano declared.
The concerns, however, do not stop at the school. The proximity of the institute to the San Paolo Hospital has prompted theASL Naples 1 to initiate technical inspections also in the healthcare facility to evaluate any anomalies and ensure the safety of patients and medical staff.
This afternoon, then, a meeting of the Rescue Coordination Center was called by the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, to monitor the results of the surveys of the levels of concentration of carbon dioxide in school buildings carried out by the Fire Brigade and the Vesuvius Observatory.
The meeting was attended by the Mayors of Pozzuoli and Bacoli, representatives of the Municipality of Naples, the Fire Department, the Director of ASL Napoli 1 Centro, representatives of ASL Napoli 2 Nord and the Italian Red Cross.
Dr. D'Angelo, Director of the Emergency Management Office of the Department of Civil Protection, also participated via telematic connection.
The representative of the Municipality of Naples recalled that the mayoral ordinance of February 28th remains in force, which provides for the prohibition of using underground and semi-underground spaces of public buildings throughout the territory affected by the risk of carbon dioxide emissions, until the installation of special detectors for which the necessary initiatives aimed at purchasing are being adopted.
The Director of ASL Napoli 1 reported that, in order to verify compliance with the ordinance of the Municipality of Naples, the Prevention and Safety Operating Units will carry out targeted checks in the workplace on the obligation to respect self-protection measures throughout the indicated area, the ban on using underground and semi-underground rooms for work activities and that those responsible for the prevention and protection service (or RSPP) integrate the risk assessment document.
The checks will also be carried out at the San Paolo Hospital, even if outside the area indicated in the above-mentioned perimeter.
The Director of the Metropolitan Area Inspectorate of Naples has confirmed the continuation of checks on workplaces aimed at ensuring the safety of personnel.
During the meeting, the representative of the Fire Brigade illustrated the verification activity carried out, specifying that the Corps will continue to guarantee support in the detection of carbon dioxide levels.
Dr. D'Angelo of the Civil Protection shared with the Round Table the need for a more complete mapping of the places at risk, which could possibly concern not only the underground and semi-underground floors but also the most depressed areas or in any case those most exposed to risk due to the particular geological conformation, in order to extend the precautionary measures provided for by the mayoral ordinances.
It was agreed to carry out a further update on the topic, tomorrow morning, also in order to acquire observations from the Vesuvius Observatory.
All institutional actors have confirmed the high level of attention on the situation, to protect public and private safety.
