Naples – “It is premature now” to hypothesize a modification of the alert system related to bradyseism in the Campi Flegrei. This is how the head of the Civil Protection Fabio Ciciliano responded to a specific question, when asked on the sidelines of a monothematic session on the topic of the Naples City Council.
“We are certainly not in orange, we are in yellow, as has been the case for several years,” Ciciliano clarified.
“The biochemical parameters recorded in the caldera area have shown an increase in carbon dioxide, but this is absolutely normal in a volcanic area: these are typical phenomena not only of Campi Flegrei, but secondary volcanic phenomena are present in all the risk areas", added the head of the Civil Protection Fabio Ciciliano.
"It's a discussion - adds Ciciliano - that is not new insofar as they are gases that are normally released in volcanic areas. They are secondary volcanic effects and must be carefully monitored". "Carbon dioxide - he clarifies - is not carbon monoxide, it is not a toxic gas, but it is denser than air and stratifies downwards.
These are phenomena that have existed for thousands of years and will remain for thousands of years. However, it is important to know that in depressed areas, basements, garages or under the stairs, CO2 could accumulate and, therefore, it is good practice to evaluate, with devices that cost a few euros, the presence or absence of carbon dioxide and its concentration. Those who live on the third floor or in ventilated areas can live peacefully”.

It is important to know that carbon dioxide is a normal gas in volcanic areas, but people should be cautious. Safety should always be a priority and regular checks are essential to avoid health problems.
