Naples – A decisive action against illegal building in the area of Campi Flegrei: this is underlined by the prosecutor of Naples, Nicola Gratteri.

The head of the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office spoke this morning on the sidelines of the presentation of Legambiente's Ecomafia Report, held in the evocative setting of the church of Sant'Aniello a Caponapoli.

“In the last year we have strongly accelerated the fight against illegal constructions,” Gratteri said, highlighting the results achieved by the Naples Prosecutor’s Office. “We have almost tripled demolitions, especially in the Campi Flegrei area, where recent earthquakes are clearly showing the risks associated with these structures.”

The numbers speak for themselves: “This year we have demolished 171 illegal buildings,” the prosecutor said, specifying that these are not minor interventions, such as closing a terrace to create an extra room, but rather truly imposing buildings.

"We are talking about buildings measuring 400-500 square meters, even two or three floors, completely illegal, built in a sensitive area like Campi Flegrei. Operations of this type, in the past, had not been carried out with this intensity."

The commitment of the Prosecutor's Office, according to Gratteri, marks a change of pace compared to the previous year, with particular attention to the protection of the territory and the safety of citizens in an area at high seismic risk.

Action against illegal building is certainly important, but the question is whether demolitions are enough to solve the problem. Earthquakes have highlighted the fragility of these structures, but what happens next?
