Naples – “Become an influencer of Civil Protection – volcanoes of ideas: the Campi Flegrei in a reel”: this is the prize competition promoted by the Campania Region, for all primary and secondary schools (first and second level) in the Red Zone of the Campi Flegrei.
The contest, organized by the Civil Protection of the Campania Region, in collaboration with the Regional School Office, aims to increase awareness among young people on the bradyseismic phenomenon and volcanic risk; to contribute to the dissemination of procedures related to current civil protection planning; to educate and sensitize students on the prevention of natural risks; as well as to contribute to the dissemination of modern civil protection culture.
The primary and secondary schools of I and II degree, public and private, located in the Municipalities of the red zone for volcanic risk in Campi Flegrei that want to participate, will have to create a short video-reel (max 90"), with educational purposes, in which the children, through their creativity, raise awareness among their peers and the Phlegraean communities on the issues of volcanic risk and/or bradyseism and related phenomena. Individual classes can apply for the prize, each with their own reel, or even the entire institute with a single reel.
For the competition, 10 prizes of 2.000 euros each are allocated, divided as follows: three prizes for primary schools, three prizes for lower secondary schools, four prizes for upper secondary schools. To take part in the competition, schools must send the application form, attaching the reel made, no later than May 10th.
Participation in the competition involves the creation of videos for social use, a “reel”, which aims to highlight the adoption of good civil protection practices. In this way, students can become civil protection influencers, testimonials of a more aware and resilient coexistence with a territory at risk, positively infecting the remaining part of the population.
In the reels, various aspects connected to the bradyseismic phenomenon and volcanic risk can be discussed and explored, for example, how the presence of the volcano affects the daily life of the community, the precautionary measures in place and how the community has prepared itself or can prepare itself better; the scenarios of a possible emergency, underlining the importance of the community's preparation and response;
prevention measures, evacuation routes, and other crucial information on civil protection; scientific data on the risk at Campi Flegrei and how to prepare for it, making the information easily understandable to everyone; the role that civil protection volunteer organizations have today in spreading the culture of prevention or in emergency relief actions;
the relationship between institutions, the scientific community and citizens, in the era of social media and new ways of interacting; the role of existing civil protection plans and how to raise awareness among the community about the importance of being ready and prepared; how to involve the community more in civil protection programs through volunteering, educational programs, or public exercises;
socio-cultural aspects related to the presence of the volcano and the bradyseismic phenomenon such as the influence on cultural, artistic and archaeological assets (e.g. the underwater archaeological park of Baia, the temple of Serapis, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, etc.); how distorted and non-institutional communication contributes to creating confusion among citizens; best practices in relation to the phenomenon of volcanic gases, taking into account the Guidelines adopted by the Local Health Authorities and the Regional Civil Protection. The contest is part of the numerous initiatives aimed at the world of Schools, provided for by the "Public Communication Plan" approved by the Regional Council of Campania for the phenomenon of bradyseism and the volcanic risk in the Campi Flegrei.
The Civil Protection has already distributed specific information materials to schools, created by the Campania Region, the National Department of Civil Protection and the INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano.
In particular, primary schools were provided with: the kit “Io Non Rischio Scuola – Campania special edition” with the related video tutorials, and the volume “Noi ei Vulcani” (available at the following link: https://www.regione.campania.it/regione/it/campi-flegrei/i-progetti-per-le-scuole-primarie).
The two publications propose an educational and laboratory path useful for learning the main risks that characterize the regional territory, including bradyseism and volcanic risk. The comic “L'attimo decisivo” was distributed by the regional Civil Protection to the secondary schools of the Red Zone of Campi Flegrei.

All Primary and Secondary schools in the Red Zone of Campi Flegrei that wish to participate in the contest can download the Notice, Regulations and attachments. The Regulations have already been sent to the Regional School Office, to allow it to be forwarded to all schools in the area concerned. The contest for schools about volcanoes and bradyseism seems interesting, but I'm not sure if all the students will understand the information well and how to create a reel. The communication should be clearer.
