On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Neapolitan entrepreneur Assunta Pacifico, founder of the historic restaurant 'The Daughter of the Sailor, has chosen to celebrate March 8, 2025 with an initiative of strong symbolic impact.
In front of the premises on Via Foria, a gigantic red shoe, over two metres tall, was installed, inspired by the “red shoes” by Mexican artist Elina Chauvet, which have become a powerful symbol against gender violence and femicide.
Next to the work, a plaque bears the inscription: “Lest we forget… dedicated to all the women who fight and who have fought for freedom”. A clear and incisive message that draws attention to the battles still open for women's rights.
Beyond the Mimosa: A Call for Awareness
The installation is accompanied by an emotional video, published on the restaurant's social channels, in which Assunta Pacifico expresses her thoughts on March 8th: “For every woman who receives flowers today, there are too many who still fight for their freedom. Respect for women must always be there, not just once a year”.
Known for her social commitment and already awarded by Coldiretti for her work in support of women, the Neapolitan entrepreneur underlines the urgency of a cultural change: “I wanted an installation that would be a warning, an invitation to reflect on how many women are still victims of violence or forced to live in conditions of oppression”.
A symbol of struggle and hope
Assunta Pacifico's initiative is part of a still critical context, marked by numerous episodes of femicide and discrimination. The red shoe of via Foria thus becomes a symbol of struggle, but also of hope: an appeal to build a more just society, in which women can be truly free to choose their own destiny.

The red shoe is a nice idea, but I don't know if this is enough to make a real change. Women need more support and less words. Let's hope there is more attention on these issues and that it is not just a symbolic event.
