Maddaloni – They stage an accident to get compensation, but they are discovered and arrested. A 38-year-old man, under special surveillance, and his 37-year-old partner, both residents of Maddaloni, were stopped by the Carabinieri of the local station on charges of attempted extortion in competition.
The episode occurred on the evening of March 12, when the couple identified a 40-year-old local man and staged a pretext to ask him for money. According to the investigators' reconstruction, the 38-year-old accused the victim of hitting him with his arm, causing him to drop his phone and break it. Claiming that the device belonged to his partner, he then made a request for compensation of 180 euros, threatening the man.
The victim, knowing the couple's history and having already been subjected to similar requests, pretended to comply with the request and left with the excuse of taking the money. Once home, however, he alerted 112. In the meantime, he went down to the street and held the two until the carabinieri arrived.
When the military arrived, the 38-year-old attempted to justify himself, showing a damaged phone and claiming that it was the one he had dropped. However, the carabinieri discovered that the device had no SIM card and that the woman had another perfectly working cell phone.
Further investigations revealed that the episode was part of a pattern of repeated extortion: the victim had already reported similar requests to the Carabinieri station, which had taken place in February.
