The Rome Public Prosecutor's Office has requested the indictment of four doctors in relation to the death of journalist Andrea Purgatori, which occurred on 19 July 2023 at the Villa Margherita clinic.
The doctors, radiologist Gianfranco Gualdi, his assistant Claudio Di Biasi, Dr. Maria Chiara Colaiacomo and cardiologist Guido Laudani, are accused of manslaughter.
The preliminary hearing has been set for September 19. The decision of the Prosecutor's Office follows the conclusions of the forensic medical report, which highlighted a "catastrophic sequence of errors and omissions" by the doctors.
In particular, cardiologist Laudani was criticized for having carried out “insufficient diagnostic investigations” and for having “incorrectly interpreted the results of the Holter examination”.
According to the experts, a correct diagnostic-therapeutic treatment could have prolonged the life of Purgatori, an oncology patient with a complex clinical picture. The expert report found that endocarditis, the cause of death, could have been identified promptly, allowing a one-year survival rate of 80%.
