Naples – Tensions in the Spanish Quarter, where protest banners have appeared against the filming of the prequel to the successful TV series Gomorrah - The Origins, which should be carried out in the next few days in the alleys near Via Toledo.

Residents of the area expressed their disappointment through a video posted on social media, denouncing the alleged negative impact that the series would give to the city. Banners display slogans such as "Speculative takes, unforgivable insults" e "Action, rolling, Naples in sight".

La protest, promoted by Facebook profile "Children of the South, sovereign people", found the support of the Neoborbonica cultural association and its president, Gennaro De Crescenzo.

"Once again, our city is being exploited as a setting for a narrative that continues to damage its image, fueling dangerous stereotypes and presenting the world with a distorted vision of Neapolitan reality," said De Crescenzo.

"For years, we've been denouncing how cinema and television have contributed to creating and spreading a false image of Naples, turning it into a symbol of crime and decay. This narrative, besides being offensive to our history and to those who work honestly every day, has real consequences: it drives away investors, damages tourism, and affects entire generations."

Particularly critical is the reference to the search for extras among 14- to 17-year-olds. "This is a very serious signal," De Crescenzo added. "We continue to insist on an imagery that brings very young people into a world that shouldn't belong to them. Naples is not this. Naples was the capital of a nation rich in culture, art, science, and innovation, and this should be the story we tell on screen."

"Enough with those who promote a false image of Naples."

"We strongly support - he relaunches Emilio Caserta, journalist and youth coordinator of the Neo-Bourbon Movement - who peacefully opposes this latest insult to our city and our people.

It's time to say enough to those who profit from our wounds and promote a false image of Naples.

We firmly demand that these fictions be replaced by investments in productions that tell the true story of the South, with its extraordinary traditions and immense cultural heritage. We demand institutional intervention; the mayor must protect Naples: he must refrain from issuing permits. It's time to reclaim our pride and stop passively accepting this propaganda against our land.

Politics takes the field

The protest was also echoed by the institutions. The independent regional councilor Mari Muscarà expressed his support for the citizens of the Spanish Quarters: "The city of Naples is not and will never be the permanent setting for crime. It is unacceptable that the TV series Gomorrah return to roam these areas, fueling a distorted and harmful imagery for Naples and its citizens."

Muscarà also criticized public funding for television productions, which he said damages Campania's image. "Not only does this toxic narrative continue to circulate unchecked, but it is actually funded with public money," he stated. "It is unacceptable that the Campania Region Film Commission, with the financial support of the Region, continues to finance productions that humiliate our region. I will officially demand clarity on the funding allocated to these series and for the Region to put a stop to this outrage."

A Call for a New Narrative

Emilio Caserta, journalist and youth coordinator of the Neo-Bourbon Movement, reiterated the call for a more authentic representation of Naples: "It's time to say enough to those who exploit our wounds and promote a false image of our city. We demand that, instead of these fictions, we invest in productions that tell the true story of the South, with its extraordinary traditions and immense cultural heritage. Institutions must intervene: the mayor must protect Naples by refraining from issuing permits for these filmings."

Councilor Muscarà concluded with a message of hope: "Naples deserves to be represented with dignity, with projects that celebrate its true greatness and its future. Therefore, I reiterate my full support for those in the Spanish Quarter and throughout Naples who are raising their heads and saying enough is enough, always respecting the law and civility. Gomorrah It must end. Enough with those who profit from our wounds: it's time for a new narrative, one that's proud and aware of our identity."

Meanwhile, the city awaits concrete answers from the institutions, while the peaceful protest continues to grow, fueled by the desire to restore to Naples the dignity it deserves.
