NAPLES – A journey between memory and sport, between emigration and success, between past and present: this is the story of Guillermo Stábile, the first top scorer in the history of the World Cup, who yesterday ideally returned to Naples through his nephew, Guillermo Luis Barreira.
Stábile, born in Argentina to a family originally from Sant'Arsenio, in the province of Salerno, wrote indelible pages of international football. After having shone with the Argentina jersey, he also wore that of Napoli in 1934, half a century before the arrival of Diego Armando Maradona.
The grandson, today engaged in a “roots journey” to retrace his grandfather’s path through the European cities that marked his career, was welcomed yesterday in the capital of Naples. Accompanied by his wife María Inés Caviglia, by the president of the National Museum of Italian Emigration Paolo Masini, by the coordinator of the project Arianna Censori and by the councilor of San Pietro al Tanagro, Elena Fiordispina, Barreira was received at Palazzo San Giacomo.
The mayor of Naples welcomed him Gaetano Manfredi, Deputy Mayor Laura Lieto and Sports Councilor Emanuela Ferrante, who wanted to honor him with the city's official medal, a symbol of a bond that resists time and distance. A meeting that celebrated not only a great protagonist of world football, but also the story of many emigrant families who, despite the distance, continue to feel part of their homeland.

and really a nice article that talks about Guillermo Stabile and his family, it makes me think about how important memory is in sports. Today there are many players who have roots like him and I'm sure that they also have interesting stories to tell.
The story of Guillermo Stábile is really interesting, but there are many things I don't know. His nephew had a nice trip, but why Naples? There are other cities to visit.
It's true, Naples has a rich history, but I wonder why only now is Stábile and his family being talked about so much. It would have been nice to know more about his origins.
