Naples – “Unfortunately, we are increasingly witnessing episodes in which minors are both protagonists and suspects, perpetrators of brutal crimes such as those sadly known in the news every day, and sometimes victims of similar crimes committed by young adults”.
This was stated by Patrizia Imperato, Public Prosecutor at the Juvenile Court of Naples, answering reporters on the sidelines of an event of the Polis Foundation of the Campania Region for the presentation of the research 'Mind the Children: vulnerability and deviance in Campania', financed by the Ministry of University and Research, in the Church of Saints Marcellinus and Festus in Napoli.
“It is a phenomenon that we witness in a rather helpless manner with respect to what the tools to prevent this situation could be,” explains Imperato.
“Obviously, greater intervention is needed on the part of all institutions to provide these minors and these young adults with alternative life models, trying above all to create job opportunities that give them the possibility of finding personal dignity outside of the deviant models to which they end up adhering”.
To those who ask her if today we are witnessing a weakening of the school and the family, she replies: "It is sadly so. Let's say that these kids feel very little listened to both at home by their parents, taken a bit by professional occupations, often by other social activities: just think of the excessive use of social media that is not only a characteristic of kids but also of adults".
As for school, "now, often and willingly, we pay more attention to business logic than to the logic of a place where in reality we should create cohesion among kids, teach them concepts such as mutual respect, solidarity and teach them to be able to live together respecting each other".

It is really worrying to see how minors are involved in situations like this. More effective solutions should be found to prevent these phenomena and to listen more to the needs of children. School and family must collaborate.
