Diana Dell'Osso, a 32-year-old teacher from Naples, has launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe to purchase an electric wheelchair that would help her get to class. She was recently called into service in the province of La Spezia.
“My illness,” he says, “is called hypokalemic periodic paralysis and it affects one in about a thousand people. Some days, if I don’t overdo it with movement, I can walk and do things, not quite like everyone else, but almost. I have a lot of pain, I have to constantly measure my energy. Then, a hundred more times, my muscles take a vacation and I can’t stand up.”
“After years of study and sacrifice,” he continues, “I won a competition that will allow me to be a teacher next year. There’s just one problem. Today I work remotely, but soon I’ll have to go to class every day.”
"Medicines, willpower and a lot of pain tolerance will not be enough - he explains - but I will need an electric wheelchair that will allow me to get to class. Given the diagnostic delay of ten years from the onset of symptoms and having waited for further investigations until the end of 2024, I still do not have a disability recognized by INPS of a sufficient amount to guarantee that the expense will be covered by the health system", he specifies.
“Unfortunately, these essential tools for life cost a lot, especially those that can be folded up and put in small cars like the one that, due to budget constraints, I chose among the cheapest (and therefore tightest) and bought last summer,” concludes Diana.
