Article Key Points
The Catania Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation, seizing the area of the ship where the accident occurred. A Catania operator of about 60 years of age is being investigated for manslaughter, while the position of two workers is being assessed. The investigations are entrusted to the police.
The accident would have occurred during the loading phases in the port of the Etna capital. Coast Guard soldiers, border police agents and 118 personnel intervened on site.
The seizure ordered by the Prosecutor's Office concerns the area of the Eurocargo Ravenna, which only takes on ferries and containers, where the accident occurred. The measure blocks the ship in the port of Catania.
The unions' anger: "It's a story we don't want to tell anymore"
“Vincenzo Giova, a 52-year-old sailor, lost his life yesterday while he was on board the Eurocargo Ravenna-Palermo ship of the Grimaldi company. The dynamics of the accident are not yet clear, but according to initial reconstructions the man was crushed, dying instantly, during a loading and unloading operation of the ship”.
This was stated in a joint statement by the CGIL and the CISL, the FILT CGIL and the FIT CISL of Catania, who said they were “saddened and angry” because once again “a worker lost his life while earning a living”.
“Giova, father of four children, from Campania – the unions continue – had been working in the maritime sector for years and never returned home, leaving his family and all the people who loved him in pain. It is a story that we no longer want to tell and that instead is repeated in ever-different work contexts, but with ever-similar dynamics”.
"We are convinced that these tragedies could be avoided - the unions emphasize - if only more was invested in safety systems, training, controls and everything that has to do with the safety of those who work in all workplaces. We will continue to do our part to achieve these goals and we will never abandon this battle that we consider a priority in union action. We join with great sorrow the family members of the worker".
