Santa Maria Capua Vetere – A dramatic suicide attempt took place late yesterday morning, when a 39-year-old from Caserta ingested bleach after having secluded himself in the open countryside: only the timely intervention of the carabinieri avoided the worst.
The alarm was raised after a desperate call to 112 from the man's girlfriend, who reported that her partner had left his home in his car, intending to take his own life. The Carabinieri patrols immediately began searching and, in the meantime, the man himself contacted the Operations Center, confirming his intentions in a trembling and desperate voice.
The military tried to gain time, keeping him on the phone to dissuade him from committing the extreme act and, in the meantime, locate him. After a few minutes, the 39-year-old's car was spotted parked in via Brennero, but there was no trace of him. The carabinieri then continued the search on foot, finding him shortly after sitting on a log in a nearby lot.
At the sight of the soldiers, the man tried to ingest the corrosive substance contained in a plastic bottle again. With exceptional promptness, one of the carabinieri managed to snatch it from his hand, but the container was now almost empty. Shortly after, the 39-year-old showed the first signs of collapse.
While waiting for the arrival of 118, the military performed the first rescue maneuvers, thus allowing him to be stabilized. The man was rushed to the hospital in Caserta, where he was admitted with a red code, but fortunately his life is not in danger.
