Sant'Antonio Abate – Shock operation by the Metropolitan Police of Naples against river pollution Sarno. This morning, under the direction of Commander Rea and on behalf of the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office (led by Prosecutor Nunzio Fragliasso), three businesses in the municipality of Sant'Antonio Abate were seized, deemed responsible for serious environmental crimes.
The first case: the illegal car wrecker
The first company, formally dedicated to the sale of auto parts, actually operated as an illegal car dismantler in three distinct areas, without authorizations. The agents seized:
A main shed with an adjoining yard;
An unpaved open area used as a landfill;
A second shed filled with waste from vehicle dismantling;
An illegal workshop, complete with equipment, set up inside the structure.
The wash water, contaminated by oils and toxic substances, was poured directly onto the public road, then infiltrated into the surrounding agricultural land and reached the Marna canal, a tributary of the Sarno.
Upholsterer and illegal landfill: the other seizures
The second business hit by the blitz is a car upholsterer, fined for:
Violation of air emissions regulations;
Illegal waste management.
Finally, a further area used for the illegal storage of waste, owned by a third party, was placed under seizure.
Operation balance sheet
The intervention led to:
5 reports for environmental crimes;
3 seizures (one of which was divided into three lots);
5 restricted areas, for a total of 4.000 square meters;
Thousands of tons of waste remediated.
The operation is part of the plan to clean up the Sarno, one of the most polluted waterways in Europe, which has been the focus of investigations for years for illegal discharges and industrial spills. The Metropolitan Police has assured that checks will continue to identify and sanction other irregular activities.
