Setback for the regional law on medically assisted suicide in Campania: the text, which arrived in the Council, did not obtain the green light from the 2nd Budget Committee, due to the lack of financial coverage, effectively blocking the legislative process.
The speaker, the advisor Luigi Abbate, illustrated the provision, underlining that the aim of the law was to regulate the administrative procedures and guarantee certain and rapid times for the ASL's responses to patients' requests in the conditions foreseen by the Constitutional Court ruling 242/2019. However, the President of the Regional Council of Campania, Gennaro Oliviero, declared that the absence of the opinion of the Budget Committee made it impossible to proceed with the vote.
“The law lacks financial coverage, therefore the law is missing”, Oliviero ruled. The halt to the law has unleashed bitter controversies among the regional councilors. Maria Muscarà he criticized the accumulated delays: “This is a civilized law, but we have wasted too much time”.
The intervention was also tough Severino Nappi (Alloy), who pointed the finger at the governor Vincenzo De Luca, absent from the classroom: "His absence is indefensible. You have done what you wanted hundreds of times, but it is unacceptable to do so on such a sensitive issue.".
Of a different opinion Valeria Ciarambino, according to which the theme would have deserved a more in-depth debate before arriving in class: “Personally, I have many doubts of conscience. We must not rush on these issues, which cannot be approved by majority vote”.
Il Chairman of the Budget Committee, Franco Picarone, assured that the text will be re-examined and reintroduced to the Council soon for discussion. However, the real political will to carry forward the measure and the resources needed to make it feasible remain unknown.

It is a real shame that the law on assisted suicide was blocked, even though it was important. The lack of financial coverage is a serious problem, but there should have been more discussion before deciding. I believe that people deserve to have choices.
