Rome – “The people evacuated in the Campi Flegrei area with evacuation orders from the mayors are 388, 163 of them families”.
This was stated by the Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, Nello Musumeci, during an urgent briefing to the Chamber regarding the recent seismic events that have hit the Campi Flegrei area and the state of implementation of interventions for the population.
“Sixty families – he added – have been placed in special hotel facilities, 47 in the four specifically set up shelter areas, the others have found independent accommodation or in other forms”.
“As of yesterday, the firefighters had approximately 1.260 requests for intervention for static checks, of which 1.020 have already been carried out.”
“As of March 15, 640 requests for inspections have been submitted by citizens, of which approximately two-thirds fall within areas with a high and medium concentration of vulnerable buildings. Of these, 45,3% relate to the Municipality of Pozzuoli, 50,8% to the Municipality of Naples and 3,9% to that of Bacoli. The national technical structure and the Campania Region have been mobilized to begin inspections in the coming days.”
Musumeci as usual blames the inhabitants of Campi Flegrei
Then the minister wanted to argue as usual about the building in the area, forgetting as has been heard in his Sicily and elsewhere in other parts of Italy.
"The Campi Flegrei area coincides with one of the most dangerous active volcanoes in the world. Careful and responsible urban planning should have prevented any building activity since the post-war period."
“In the past decades, public institutions should have guided the ever-growing population with common sense and responsibility towards a solid culture of risk awareness. Instead, they often preferred to remain silent, minimize, and dismiss any reasoning with the usual catchphrase 'no fear, it has always been this way here'.
