A serious accident has rocked Egypt's Red Sea coast, where a tourist submarine sank off the coast of Hurghada, a popular seaside resort.
The toll, reported by the Egyptian state media Al-Akhbar Al-Youm, is six dead and 19 injured. On board the bathyscaphe, called “Sindbad” and owned by the hotel of the same name, there were 45 Russian tourists, including some minors, as confirmed by the Russian Consulate General in Hurghada in a note taken up by the agency Ria Novosti.
The tragedy occurred on the morning of Thursday, March 27, around 10:XNUMX, about a kilometer from the coast. The submarine, engaged in a routine underwater excursion to explore the coral reef, suddenly sank.
The passengers, all Russian citizens on holiday with tour operator Biblio Globus, were accompanied by the crew on what was supposed to be an unforgettable experience among the underwater wonders of the Red Sea.
Egyptian authorities responded quickly. Hurghada Governor General Amr Hanafi went to the scene to closely monitor the operations and ordered a detailed report on the causes of the sinking, sources told Al Arabiya.
In parallel, the Minister of Tourism, Sherif Fathy, has ordered that all necessary medical care be provided to the injured, ensuring immediate support. A technical committee has also been set up to shed light on the accident, with the task of analyzing the dynamics of the event and verifying the maintenance records of the “Sindbad”.
The sinking of the tourist submarine casts a shadow over the safety of recreational activities in the region, raising questions about prevention and control measures. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether it was a technical failure or human error, while the local community and tourists await answers to a tragedy that turned a day of leisure into an international mourning.
