Vico Equense– A cabin of the Monte Faito cableway fell this evening at the top of the system, in the Vico Equense area, after a cable broke. There were several passengers and the driver on board: the toll is tragic.
The Monte Faito cable car accident has so far left four dead and one missing—the driver. This was reported by rescue sources. Firefighters and mountain rescue teams are working on the scene.
Another cabin, stuck in mid-air, is unreachable, with at least 4 people trapped and without radio contact due to adverse weather conditions.
The dynamics
The accident occurred in the late afternoon, when the cabin headed for the Faito high station (about 1200 meters) collapsed to the ground before reaching its destination. In the valley station, at Castellammare di Stabia, 16 passengers – mostly foreign tourists – were evacuated without consequences. But the situation remains dramatic for the car that remained suspended, invisible due to the thick fog and impossible to locate.
Rescue in difficulty
Firefighters, civil protection, carabinieri and police are at work, but operations are hampered by bad weather. A helicopter is flying over the area, while ambulances are already positioned waiting to intervene. The Prefecture of Naples is monitoring the situation, while the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office will open an investigation as soon as the emergency is over.
The engineer's wife in tears
At the valley station, the wife of the driver of the missing cabin arrived in tears, while waiting for news about the stranded passengers. Among them there are three or four civilians and an operator.
De Luca is coming
The president of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, is heading to Castellammare di Stabia to closely monitor the rescue efforts. In the meantime, the community is holding its breath waiting for updates on the people still missing.
