Another attack on a Penitentiary Police officer has occurred in the Benevento prison. The incident occurred yesterday: a Neapolitan inmate with psychiatric issues punched and slapped the officer on duty, forcing him to be hospitalized with a 10-day prognosis.
The Sannio prison, where some inmates are kept under a 24-hour open regime, has already been the scene of numerous episodes of violence and critical situations which, according to the unions, are undermining the security and internal order of the institution.
"Working in the Benevento penitentiary is increasingly difficult," denounces CON.SI.PE. regional secretary Tommaso De Lia . "The staff is exhausted, the workload is excessive, and the imbalance between duties and rights is putting the officers' mental and physical well-being at risk."
The union's national vice president, Luigi Castaldo, agreed : "Urgent government intervention is needed to manage psychiatric inmates, who must be entrusted to suitable facilities with adequate medical care. The safety of staff must be a priority."
CON.SI.PE. expressed full solidarity with the attacked officer, wishing him a speedy recovery.
It is really worrying that there are so many security problems in a prison. The officers work in difficult conditions and the situation does not seem to be improving. I hope the government takes measures to address this critical situation.
