Ceiling collapses at Capri Police Station: fear and protests

ON THE SAME TOPIC

Capri – A serious episode has alarmed the Police Station of Capri in the early afternoon on Saturday, when a part of the ceiling suddenly came loose, causing a rain of rubble and plaster inside the premises on Via Roma.

Fortunately, there were no injuries among the staff or citizens present, but the incident has reignited controversy over the conditions of the building, which has already been denounced several times by the unions.

Cosap's warning: "Unusable structure, risks ignored"

The alarm was raised by CoSAP (Coordinamento Sindacale Autonomo di Polizia), which released a statement accompanied by eloquent images of the damage. “A large part of the attic collapsed,” reads the note signed by the provincial secretary Domenico Pagano, who emphasizes that only by pure luck did the accident not have more serious consequences.

The union did not mince its words: “We have already denounced the structural deficiencies and the unusability of this police station in the past, but nothing has been done”. Addressing the Naples Police Chief directly, the CoSAP recalled that “as an employer, it has the obligation to guarantee the safety of its staff”.

Police station closed, services reduced

Following the collapse, access to the offices was temporarily prohibited until minimum safety conditions were restored. In the meantime, the Police ensure essential services, including checks on the territory with patrol cars and emergency response via 113.

The situation raises the issue of the safety of public buildings, especially on a tourist island like Capri, where the presence of law enforcement is essential. We are now waiting for a structural intervention to prevent similar episodes from happening again, perhaps with more dramatic outcomes.

Meanwhile, the question circulates insistently: how much longer will staff have to wait to work in a safe environment?

“The security of our territory and the police are in the worst condition in the last 30 years” - says AVS deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli - “Barracks and police stations are closing, there is a lack of personnel, many spaces are dilapidated and unusable and things continue to get worse day by day. If crime is rampant and the citizens' sense of security is collapsing like dilapidated attics, there must be a reason”.

  1. The collapse episode in Capri is very worrying, but I think that the structural problems have been ignored for too long. The safety of people must be the priority, I hope that urgent measures are taken to resolve this situation.
