A 40-year-old man, resident in Monteforte Irpino, in the province of Avellino, was arrested yesterday by the Flying Squad on charges of a series of serious crimes: stalking, private violence, damage, injury, threats and illegal possession of a weapon.
The arrest, ordered by the investigating judge of the Court of Avellino, was triggered by the “red code”, the emergency procedure for cases of gender-based violence, and the suspect was placed under house arrest.
According to the reconstruction by the Avellino Prosecutor's Office, the 40-year-old allegedly stalked his ex-wife for months after the end of their marriage, turning her life into a nightmare. On several occasions, the man allegedly chased the woman in his car, ramming her and forcing her to stop, and then threatened her with a gun.
Not only that: his relentlessness would have also extended to his ex's new partner, who was attacked with kicks and punches in an episode that culminated in the city centre.
The last act of violence took place near a bar, where the man ran into the couple again. After threatening to kill his rival, he lunged at him, hitting him repeatedly and causing injuries to his face and chest.
Previously, he had also denigrated his ex-wife in front of his partner and some friends, before chasing her in his car and cutting her off in a further attempt to intimidate her.
The investigations, conducted by the Flying Squad, brought to light a pattern of repeated violence and harassment, which prompted the authorities to intervene urgently. The investigating judge ordered the man to be placed under house arrest, with an absolute ban on communicating with anyone except his family members or those assisting him.
A case that highlights, once again, the importance of the “red code” in combating gender violence and protecting victims.
