Naples - A reborn soccer field in the heart of the Sanità district, where the news too often recounts stories of the Camorra, today becomes a symbol of hope and redemption.
It was inaugurated inside the complex of Saint Gennaro of the Poor the new sports centre promoted by Argentine football federation (Afa) and from the association Spaccanapoli Sporting.
A social initiative aimed at the neighborhood kids, with easy access also thanks to the sports vouchers granted by the Campania Region.
The slogan stands out on the facade “Cultivating talent, collecting legends” and a giant poster with the faces of Maradona, Messi and LavezziAt the inauguration, well-known faces of Argentine football such as Hernan Crespo, German Denis and Lucas Biglia. With them also the Genny Cesarano's father, the 17-year-old innocent victim of the Camorra in 2015.
"This project is dedicated to children who cannot afford a football school – has explained Gustavo Aragolaza, director of the Academy Afa in Italy –. Napoli was chosen for Diego's legacy. We want to give these kids a dream."
The facility, now equipped with synthetic grass, will be the official headquarters of the Argentine academy in the city. Space for 250 young people, between 4 and 16 years old, who will be able to grow in an environment that combines sport, education and values.
"We feel like street urchins among street urchins – said Vincenzo Salzano of Spaccanapoli Sporting –. This camp represents a concrete opportunity for many young people in the neighborhood.". The goal now is to also create a multipurpose center with spaces for padel, fitness and volleyball, and the assignment of sports scholarships.
During the ceremony a plaque in memory of Maradona was also unveiled with the poet's verses Savior Pius Napolitano, while the bells of the nearby Basilica rang almost in blessing. A day of celebration, between music, sports and memory.
