Lucca – An attempted scam was carried out on an elderly couple using the classic technique of pretending to be a carabiniere , but this time the scam failed thanks to the prompt action of the military personnel at the San Concordio station.
The perpetrator of the scam, a 34-year-old unemployed resident of Naples, was stopped and arrested shortly before getting his hands on the loot.
The reconstruction
It all began with a phone call received by the two spouses: on the other end of the line, a man pretended to be a Carabinieri marshal , claiming that their car had been involved in a robbery in the North due to a cloned license plate.
To "clarify the situation", the elderly man was invited to go to the San Concordio barracks.
Fortunately, before leaving the house, the victim called the real Carabinieri , who immediately understood the situation. To avoid arousing the scammer's suspicions, they let the man leave as agreed, while a plainclothes officer arrived on the scene.
The trap is sprung
Meanwhile, the wife received a second call from the self-styled marshal , who asked her if there were any cameras or a safe in the house. Then, announcing the arrival of an associate , he ordered her to prepare jewelry and cash for a confrontation with the stolen goods.
But when the fake sergeant showed up at the door, the real Carabinieri were waiting for him, and they immediately stopped him. The man, without any documents and with a criminal record for similar crimes, was arrested for attempted fraud and false identification.
The alarm of the experts
The incident is part of a growing trend of scams, particularly targeting the elderly. Law enforcement officials remind people that no Carabinieri officer will ever ask for money or valuables over the phone and urge people to always verify the situation by calling 112 before taking action.
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old was taken to prison awaiting trial, while the couple of victims, although shocked, managed to avoid the worst thanks to their lucidity and the timely reaction of the military.
