Naples – The Constitutional Court is preparing to decide on the case of the third mandate of Vincenzo De Luca, president of Campania, in a hearing expected for tomorrow.
Article Key Points
The appeal presented by the Council of Ministers against the Campania regional law – which would allow De Luca to run again – could have consequences well beyond the borders of the South, also influencing the debate on the re-candidacy of the Veneto governor Luca Zaia.
A clash with national repercussions
The government has challenged the Campania law that postpones the counting of mandates, opening a hot front with the Democratic Party. Elly Schlein has already closed every door to a new mandate for De Luca, now far from the party line.
But if the Constitutional Court were to reject the law, the Democrats could push for a shared name, following the example of Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. On the contrary, a green light for a third term would give De Luca greater negotiating power: run as an independent or impose his own heir in exchange for his withdrawal.
The Zaia knot and the clash in the centre-right
The Constitutional Court's decision will also have an impact in the North, where the League is pushing for Zaia's re-candidacy in Veneto, despite the resistance of the Brothers of Italy. The governor of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Massimiliano Fedriga, defends the possibility of a third mandate: "If a law limits citizens' choice, it's a problem of democracy."
Meanwhile, the centre-right is discussing between a political candidacy (with names like Cirielli for FdI and Zinzi for the League) and a civic profile, an option welcomed by Forza Italia after the withdrawal of Martusciello.
De Luca against the Democratic Party: “Hypocrisy of poor art”
The governor of Campania did not spare criticism of the Democrats, accusing them of not having opposed the government's attack: "It is shameful that an opposition party remains silent in the face of an unequal law.
It is yet another proof of hypocrisy”. Meanwhile, all eyes are on the Consulta: the sentence could arrive as early as tomorrow evening, or at the latest on Thursday. A decision that will mark not only the future of Campania, but also the balance of national politics.
