Torre del Greco, former mayor Borriello and Balsamo brothers acquitted: "The fact does not exist"

ON THE SAME TOPIC

Torre del Greco – After eight years of legal battles, the former mayor of Torre del Greco, Ciro Borriello, and the top management of the Fratelli Balsamo company have been fully acquitted of corruption charges.

The sentence, issued by the Court of Torre Annunziata, has erased any doubts about the alleged bribe of 20.000 euros per month that, according to the prosecution, would have been paid for the management of the waste contract.

The End of a Legal Nightmare

The decision of the panel presided over by Judge Mariaconcetta Criscuolo puts an end to a long and troubled judicial process that began with the arrest of the four "excellent" defendants back on August 7, 2017.

The investigations, conducted by the Guardia di Finanza under the coordination of the public prosecutor Silvio Pavia, had led to the accusation of bribes and the subsequent indictment.

Francesco and Virgilio Poeti also acquitted

In addition to Borriello and the Balsamo Brothers, the court also acquitted Francesco and Virgilio Poeti, accused of issuing false invoices to benefit the urban hygiene giant.

Borriello's statements

“During this long ordeal of mine, despite everything, I have always believed in the State, I have always had faith in the judiciary,” Ciro Borriello declared after the sentence. “They have been painful years for me, especially during the period of unjust detention. Devastating moments that have profoundly undermined the serenity of my family.”

A terrible condition that has inevitably affected my life as a politician and administrator, as well as all those people dear to me. Now I just want to regain the tranquility unjustly denied and to face my professional commitments with greater strength and enthusiasm. I extend a dutiful and sincere thanks to my lawyers, attorney Maurizio Paniz and Giancarlo Panariello, for the fruitful work done”

The city's reaction

The verdict has sparked mixed reactions in the city. On the one hand, Borriello's supporters have welcomed the news with joy, emphasizing his innocence and the long ordeal he has endured. On the other hand, some politicians and citizens have expressed doubts and asked for clarifications on the actions of the judiciary.

A closed chapter

With this ruling, a controversial chapter in the political and judicial history of Torre del Greco is closed. Now, the city looks forward, hoping to leave behind the controversies and divisions of the past.
