He attempted to scam an elderly woman with the usual “fake policeman” technique, but the victim, far from being naive, turned the situation around, contributing to his arrest.
It happened to Caprino Veronese, in the Verona area, where the Carabinieri of the Radiomobile Operations Unit have 51 year old from Naples arrested.
The man had contacted the woman on the landline, pretending to be a member of the Carabinieri. In an alarmed tone he had told her that her son had been involved in a serious road accident and that, to avoid legal problems, it would have been necessary to immediately deliver a large sum of money or jewelry to a presumed colleague arriving at the home.
The elderly woman prepared a “rigged package” for the scammer
The old woman, suspicious, pretended to fall into the trap, declaring herself ready to hand over the valuables. In reality, with promptness he called 112 from the cell phone, while he handed over a “rigged” package, containing only a sweater, a cardboard box and some objects to simulate the jingling of jewels.
When the fake carabiniere arrived, the military were already stationed in the area: the man was blocked and arrested. After the validation hearing, Judge Sabrina Miceli ordered the precautionary measure ofobligation to reside in the municipality of Naples.
The episode is yet another confirmation of how collaboration between citizens and law enforcement is essential to combat the phenomenon of scams targeting the elderly.
