An entire hamlet built without any trace of building permits and with serious suspicions of environmental pollution.

This is the picture that emerged from the investigations of the Public Prosecutor's Office Santa Maria Capua Vetere, which last April 10th sealed off an imposing building on the coast of Castel Volturno: the former Hotel Residence Fontana Bleu, today known as Palazzo Marina, an eight-story building with 104 apartments, with an estimated value of 25 million euros.

The mega-seizure, coordinated by prosecutor Pierpaolo Bruni, is just the tip of the iceberg. According to investigators, at Villaggio Coppola – a residential area built in the 70s by a well-known family of building contractors – the building permits for most of the buildings in the area do not appear in the municipal registers.

To make the scenario even more gloomy, there is the suspicion of an illegal burial of waste under the golf courses attached to the Hotel Resort Marina di Castello, one of the jewels in the crown of the area, located right next to the sports center used by Napoli Calcio for training. The burial dates back to the 90s.

Two people are currently under investigation: the former commander of the Port Authority of Castel Volturno, Francesco Pappalardo, 65 years old, and Domenico Romano, 70 years old, a historic collaborator of the entrepreneur Cristoforo Coppola, now deceased but at the centre, in the past, of the events linked to the birth of the Village.

Investigations are continuing to ascertain the actual extent of the illegal construction and the possible environmental damage caused by the works carried out in recent decades.

It is really worrying that there are buildings built without licenses, this shows a lack of control by the authorities. Furthermore, environmental pollution could have serious consequences for the health of citizens and for the environment.
