A near tragedy occurred this afternoon on the A16 Napoli-Canosa motorway, near the Baiano toll booth, in the province of Avellino. A 53-year-old woman managed to get out of her car in time before it was completely engulfed in flames. According to initial reports, the fire suddenly started in the engine compartment while the car was driving towards Naples.
The worst was avoided by the promptness of the driver, who managed to pull over and abandon the car in a matter of seconds. Shortly after, the passenger compartment was devoured by flames, making the vehicle unrecognizable.
The Fire Department intervened promptly at the request of the Highway Patrol, putting out the fire and securing the roadway, made dangerous by debris and the column of smoke that had risen. No other vehicles were involved, but the accident caused slowdowns and moments of fear among motorists in transit.
Authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire, which may be related to a mechanical failure. The 53-year-old, in shock but unharmed, was treated on site by paramedics.

Today I read about this tragic story and I wondered how something like this could happen. Fortunately the woman managed to save herself, but it is still a very serious and worrying situation for all motorists.
