Naples – One hundred and fifty positions to train new general practitioners: this is the "breath of fresh air" offered by the regional call for applications, which expires on June 12th, but it remains a palliative in the face of the health emergency in Campania.

59% of general practitioners in Campania exceed the maximum of 1.500 patients, with unsustainable workloads.
In 4 years (2019-2023) the region has lost 9% of family doctors, while new vocations are decreasing.
“The truth is that no one wants to do this job under these conditions anymore,” explains a representative of the FIMMG (Italian Federation of General Practitioners), who rejects the accusation of “shortages” of professionals.
The reform that scares: "Risk of upheaval"
Meanwhile, the State-Regions Conference is discussing a draft reform that could require general practitioners to work in community centers, in addition to traditional practices. This change, according to doctors, would threaten their direct relationship with patients: "We would become health officials, no longer trusted doctors," they protest.
The race against time
The call for 150 specialists is only a first step, but without structural interventions – such as adequate wages and reduction of workloads – the flight from the profession seems destined to continue. And with it, the agony of the regional health service.
The situation of doctors in Campania is worrying, they seem to be really few compared to patients. The numbers are alarming and this new reform could make things worse instead of better, more effective solutions are needed.
