Mondragone – Four employees of the Municipality of Mondragone were charged with damages to the public treasury of approximately 320 thousand euros for failure to collect revenues relating to cemetery services.
The Guardia di Finanza of the Provincial Command of Caserta has notified the requests to deduct issued by the Regional Prosecutor's Office of the Court of Auditors for Campania, which has identified serious omissions in the management of public resources.
The investigations, conducted by the Mondragone Guardia di Finanza Company on behalf of the prosecutor Mauro Senatore and coordinated by the regional prosecutor Antonio Giuseppone, have highlighted a situation of substantial non-compliance.
The Municipality, despite having a regulation on cemetery services dated 1996, never updated nor adjusted to ISTAT indexes, has not proceeded to collect the sums due for paid services.
The investigations found that, between 2009 and 2014, those responsible for the mortuary police area did not collect the expected compensation, causing damage quantified at 319.468,76 euros. The Public Accounting Attorney's Office thus ordered the four employees to compensate the municipal body for the economic damage suffered.
The operation, conducted by the Court of Auditors and by the Guardia di Finanza, underlines the commitment to combating irregularities in the management of public resources, to protect the budgets of local authorities, Regions, the State and the European Union.

It is unfortunate that the employees did not follow the rules on how to collect fees for cemetery services. This leads to a loss of public money that could be better used for the community.
Yes, it is true that the Municipality should have been more careful and updated the regulation to avoid these problems. But also the employees should have done their job correctly to not cause such high damages.
